Project Overview:

The İpekböceği trams, which are the first trams made in Turkey, started running on BURULA's T1 tram line in Bursa in 2013. They are unique because they were made in Turkey. There are still ways to get from the airport to the city square using the T1 tram line. T2, Bursa's second tram line, opened for business in 2022. Along these lines, 12 two-way and 6 one-way trams from Durmazlar's İpekböceği trams work.

As Bursa's tram lines have grown, new needs have come up for their communication systems. It was necessary to set up wireless contact between tram cars so that camera pictures and MMI screens could be accessed from afar. SG Rail, which built the software systems for the trams, started looking for a way to make a wireless link that would work well in a factory setting and not put the security of the connections at risk.

To meet all of these requirements, it was decided to use industrial 4G routers as connection gear for tasks like accessing screens from afar and talking between vehicles.

Robustel’s R1520 Router To Improve Tram Communication System

To make the tram communication system better, Robustel's R1520 4G router with GPS was suggested. It works well in extreme temperatures and has many ports. The Robustel R1520-4L-GPS was first tried in the office and then on the vehicle to see how well it could handle contact on a tram line. After the routers were tested and found to work, they were put into the tram transmission system.

The Robustel R1520 router equipment has been put into service in trams on the T1 line. The map on the MMI screen shows where the vehicles are that have these routers turned on, how many are currently operating on the lines, and what information about those lines the vehicles are responsible for. With this method, if any of the vehicles where the R1520 is installed break down, the field and other vehicles are also notified.

The following features of the Robustel's R1520-4L-GPS4G router model are the reasons why it was chosen:

  • Offering stable 4G communication and high performance in a cost-effective manner
  • Providing remote access over 4G with VPN security
  • Continuing to operate smoothly at extreme temperatures from -25 to 70°C
