Background:
Currently the maritime industry has been actively adopting a set of stricter environmental regulations, such as new standards for reporting and verifying Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) data, and regulations for Fuel Oil Data Collection (DCS). These rules imply that as of 2024, a vessel’s crew is required to annually report both fuel consumption (DCS) and emissions (CII) data to the DCS verifier. The CII measures a vessel’s energy efficiency in grams of CO₂ emitted per cargo-carrying capacity and nautical mile.
Challenges:
- Complex regulatory environment: The customer is aiming to maintain compliance with several regulatory requirements simultaneously, specifically, the latest maritime cybersecurity standards IACS UR E26& E27, and the CII rating system.
- Data integrity and reporting accuracy: The customer requires to ensure protection and accuracy of data collected on a corresponding vessel, which will be transmitted to an onshore office.
- Data collection process: The customer struggled with collection and aggregation of detailed fuel oil and CO₂ emissions usage data across diverse fleet operations.
Solution
Challenges were addressed through incorporation of Robustel’s MG460 gateway equipped with a secure RCMS Stack Marine platform:
- Secure Data Handling: The MG460 gateway encrypts and securely transmits collected fuel oil data, including CII metrics, to the designated regulatory bodies or internal servers, while ensuring the cybersecurity standards set by IACS UR E26 and E27 are met.
- Adaptable and Scalable: The MG460's flexible architecture allows for easy integration with existing onboard systems, supporting both current needs and future technological advancements.
- Proactive Compliance Monitoring and Collection of Data: The MG 460 gateway in combination with the RCMS Stack Marine platform facilitates remote monitoring of connected equipment. The customer provided necessary protocols to Robustel to ensure the MG460 is able to collect data from various sensors on a vessel including Fuel Oil DCS for further operations such as calculation of the CII.
Solution Architecture
Solution Components
MG460 Maritime Cyber Security Gateway
As the world's first product to receive IEC61162-460 (Ed. 3) type approval from DNV as well as 460-Gateway and 460-Wiresless Gateway, the MG460 not only meets the highest cybersecurity standards for maritime navigation and wireless communication systems but also complies with IEC60945, meeting SOLAS vessel standards.
Device & Network Management Platform
Through RCMS Stack Marine, users can monitor the operational status and network connectivity of devices in real time, enabling timely problem identification and resolution. Furthermore, it provides VPN network services that comply with IEC61162-460 standards (direct communication mode), ensuring the security and integrity of data transmission.
Solution Benefits
